Wrestling tournament at Roosevelt

The Wayne County Wrestling Championships were held at Roosevelt High School on Saturday, December 16, 2017 and here are results from matches by a few wrestlers.
“I think I did great today, there were some tough matches but I worked hard and was able to pull it off,” senior captain Hiram Robinson said about taking first in the 189 pounds weight class.
Robinson won his first two matches by pinning the opponent and the other two by decision.
“I’ve improved from last year by just being more calm mentally going into a match and understanding the options that I have open when they’re laid out,” Robinson said.
Great performances made by other Roosevelt wrestlers as well at the tournament.
“I feel I did alright, I took third in my weight class. I lost to a really good wrestler but I still need to improve,” sophomore 130 pounds wrestler Nicholas Biundo said.
Biundo started off strong by beating his first opponent from Riverview 17-0 then pinning his next one but then lost one match making Biundo have to compete for third place.
“Last year I had a broken ankle for most of the season so I feel a lot better now that I can actually wrestle this year,” Biundo said.
Along with Biundo, junior Carlos Vargas is glad on how he wrestled at the tournament.
“I think I did very good today, I didn’t meet my goal but I was here for my first time wrestling at Wayne County [Championships] I feel I did very well,” Vargas said.
Vargas started rough by losing his first match but recovered by pinning his next opponent from Grosse Pointe.
“I placed seventh overall and my goal was to place top five but I’ll take seventh since it’s my first time here (Wayne County Championships).”
Vargas feels that he improved as a wrestler since last year on Saturday.
“Knowing that I did not wrestle here (at the Championships) and since I was on JV, I was only a backup on varsity and now I’m here wrestling for the top spot at Wayne County I feel good,” Vargas said.
