The 64th annual band sweet week took place the week of October 16, it was full of festive days for the students to participate in, including meme day, twinning day, character day, dress like another musician day, and show day.
Along with dressing up, students participate in hush days.
“There is also one day that is called girls hush day and one called boys hush day. On these days, for example if its girls hush day then all the girls from the music department get a heart with their name on it,” sophomore Grace Thomas said. “Basically you cannot talk to any people of the opposite gender that is not apart of your section.”
The students participate throughout the week to get points for their section and by the end of the week the section who participated the most will be announced at the halftime show on Friday.
“Each section competes to see who can get the most spirit points and whichever section wins they get their name and year written down,” senior Kinsey Ruffner said. “We have our own spirit week which gets people excited and it’s pretty fun so most people participate.”
In the beginning of the week the music department students voted for a band sweetheart court. On court is Stephanie Besler, Gerald Scandland, Mikayla Joy, Devin Martin, Juliana Palmer, Noah Mac, Jade Parrish, Austin Frey, Natalie Walsh, and Ryan Reichow. There is also a band sweetheart dance in December.
“We vote to have band sweetheart and a king cutie. It’s similar to the school’s homecoming except they can only go if you’re part of the music department,” Thomas said.
Each of the students have their own favorite spirit days and all of the feedback differs.
“My favorite day is probably character day because it’s easy to come up with and you can come up with a bunch of different things to wear,” freshman Jordan Samson said.
Although character day is fun to think of different things to wear, dressing like another musician is a great way to get creative with their classmates.
“My favorite day is be another band member, or musician, day because it’s usually really funny to see how others reenact other people and you can usually guess the people they are being,” Ruffner said.
Band sweet week adds another new opportunity for freshman to get involved throughout the school.
“I thought it was fun and I didn’t know some of these kids were in band so I found out about all the kids that are in band,” Samson said.
As a freshman getting involved can be difficult but can lead to a better high school experience.
“When I was a freshman I actually had no idea what band sweetheart and I was kind of just going with the flow,” Ruffner said “This year i actually know what’s going on and how everything works so it’s pretty fun and I’m actually enjoying it.”
