With Coach Justin Keyes stepping down this year, the cross country boys team finished third and girls finished fifth at the Downriver League Championships on Thursday, October 19.
“This year went better than we thought it would. A lot of young talent improved,” senior captain Rocco Jelsomeno said. “I’m definitely going to miss being around the team; they’re a fun group to be around.”
With the season being over, runners find themselves reminiscing over experiences they have had this year.
“I’ll miss the bond that the boys team had,” junior runner Jake Baker said. “It’s my favorite group of people to be around.”
Runners on the team look forward to more seasons to come.
“Getting together with all the team and running with the boys was definitely my favorite part of the season. It makes me look forward to next year,” junior Carlos Vargas said.
Cross country faced many challenges this season, such as losing a coach but still gave an effort to finish with success.
“I feel that we could’ve had a better season but it was still a successful one overall,” Baker said.
Leading the team this year along with the coaches, Jelsomeno had to show qualities as both a friend, since he is still a part of the team, and a leader.
“As captain with such a young team I had to make sure the maturity level was up when it came down to it,” Jelsomeno said.
