All five living former presidents called for both help and donations for victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma at the “Deep From the Heart: The One America Appeal” concert this past Saturday in Concert Station, Texas.
“Tonight the ex-Presidents are getting together in Texas to support all our fellow Americans rebuilding from this year’s hurricanes. Join us,” former President Barack Obama tweeted.
The event was put on by the One America Appeal (OAA) charity effort. The OAA was started by all five former living Presidents to help victims of Hurricane Harvey and Irma that hit back in August of this year.
“Originally, the former presidents were inspired to come together in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, which unleashed devastating flooding that threatened hundreds of thousands of Texans— and spurred thousands of first responders and neighbors into action. The effort has since expanded twice to include recovery efforts in Florida from Hurricane Irma, and in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands from Hurricane Maria.” A press release coming from the organization said.
According to CNN, by Sunday the organization raised over 33 million dollars in donations from over 88 thousand private donors. All of the money raised by the organization is going directly to help victims of the hurricanes who live in the U.S and it’s territories.
“"It's important that those affected by these devastating storms know that even if the path to recovery feels like a road that goes on forever, we're with them for the long haul," former president George H.W. Bush said to CNN.
President Donald Trump expressed his support for the past president's efforts and for the people who are trying to help Hurricane relief efforts.
“The American people have done what we do best,” said Trump in a video made to show his support. “All five living presidents are playing a tremendous role in helping our fellow citizens recover... This wonderful effort reminds us that we truly are one nation under God, all unified by our values and our devotion to one another.”
