Both the boys and girls cross country teams had their league championship meet yesterday at the Wyandotte Golf Course, the girls finished fifth in the league, while the boys finished third.
“I think we did pretty good today, overall i think we probably got in the top three,” said sophomore Nick Slone.
Wyandotte Boys finished placing third out of eight teams in the Downriver League. Junior Michael Sulkowski was the fastest on the team, finishing in 17:37.6. Sulkowski placed eighth individually. Placing tenth individually was senior Rocco Jelsomeno with a time of 17:50.0.
The Lady Bears finished in fifth place out of seven teams. Their times have dropped since the beginning of the season their first meet on September 19th, at Michigan State University.
“My team did really well today…we were only a few seconds off their personal record,” junior Brooke Butkin said.
The top runner from the team was junior Laila Correa, with 20:48.0. Correa placed fourth overall in the league. Junior Gabby Feltz placed eighth with a time of 21:02.1.
The course was relatively flat compared to the other meets but there were a few hills, which can be tough on the runner’s stamina. The full course equaled out to 3.1 miles and the majority of the runners on the team were able to maintain their pace throughout the whole meet.
The whole team is training throughout the winter individually to prepare themselves for next season.
When asked how she’s preparing for the next season, “Probably doing more running in the winter because I don’t much running in the winter,” Butkin said.
The boys and girls next meet will be their regional meet held on October 28, 2017 at Lake Erie Metro Park.
